The first is the decree of Cyrus, which was given in his first year (probably 537/536 B.C.)
So. Here's the interesting thing about that particular date. It is 49 years, i.e. "seven weeks" from the destruction in 586BCE.

So let's go back to verse 25: Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks

And there's your seven weeks. No weird, arbitrary starting date that matches some preconceived notion of how the prophecy is supposed to end.   The prophecy begins with the destruction of Jerusalem and promises the listener not to give in to hopelessness; in 49 years' time, by 537BCE, there will be an order to rebuild the city.

Now you can't read Hebrew, but I can. And the cantillation marks, basically the notes the way the verse is chanted, has a semicolon after the words "seven weeks". The sentence pauses, and then resumes "and for sixty two weeks..."

This is a terrible translation, by the way.  The Hebrew says "an anointed ruler" not "messiah the prince".

Quote
24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
All this is saying is that from the destruction in 586BCE, the Jews have 490 years to get things right. What happens 490 years later? Alexander Jannaeus was the king of Judea. He was the last Jewish king to sit on the throne of an independent Jewish state. When he died, his two sons had a civil war and asked the Romans in nearby Syria to adjudicate who would be the next king. The Romans selected the weaker of the two and turned Judea into a client state. It would be more than 2,000 years before an independent Jewish state would exist again.

Quote
26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself:
Another bad translation. The Hebrew says "an anointed", (as all kings were) not "Messiah". And it says "be cut off and be no more", not "not for himself."

So the question then presents itself, did nothing happen at the time prophecy gives, or did Messiah come. I think we all know the answer..

Did you read nothing I said? It doesn't mention the messiah at all.

Well, Adventist go by the Historicist view in which the prophecy of the seventy weeks of Daniel nine start date is from the year 457 BC., which, as recent archaeological evidence confirms, was the exact date of the decree of King Artaxerxes to rebuild Jerusalem (Daniel 9:25). Tracing the seventy weeks of Daniel as the Hebrew indicated, it should be rendered “seventy weeks of years” or 490 years, you arrive at the date AD. 33 which corresponds with Christ’s crucifixion, I can post the whole prophetic timeline if you need, but you can check it at https://historicist.info/articles2/seventyweeks.htm

Actually you don’t end up at 33

Danger, Will Robinson.  You will be assimilated, confiscated, folded, mutilated, and spindled. Do not pass go.  Turn right on red. Third star to the right and full speed 'til morning.

That start date is perfectly arbitrary and is only chosen because you like the end date. And it ignores the verse itself :  Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto an anointed king shall be seven weeks. And "7 weeks" or 49 years after the destruction in 586BCE, in 537BCE, an anointed king, Cyrus gave the order to rebuild the city.

Well Christians hold that the prophecy in Daniel 9:25 refers to a commandment or decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem, marking the beginning of a prophetic period leading to the coming of the Messiah. Historical and biblical evidence identifies King Artaxerxes as the issuer of this decree, which authorized the Jews to rebuild the city and restore its governance under their own laws after the Babylonian exile and we see Nehemiah 2:1-8.

Now although earlier decrees by Cyrus the Great and Darius I contributed to the restoration of the Temple and the return of exiles, the decree of Artaxerxes I fulfills the specific prophecy in Daniel 9:25, as it initiated the countdown of the “seventy weeks” leading to the Messiah. The decree allowed Nehemiah to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls and restore the city’s infrastructure which symbolized both civic and religious restoration and links up perfectly to the eventual arrival of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, as foretold in Daniel 9:25-26

Christians don't "hold that", it's the plain text of the verse. And a legitimate translation tells when the decree will come: seven "weeks", 49 years after the destruction. That's 538BCE.

ESV: Know therefore and understand that from the going out of the word to restore and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again with squares and moat, but in a troubled time.

It does not say "seven weeks and sixty two weeks." Nobody counts that way.

No, he doesn't. Because he didn't give the decree in 538BCE.

The verse doesn't say "the messiah", it says "an anointed" as all kings were at that time.
