What did the Society of St. Pius X do that has caused such ruckus? It seems it had some opposition to changes in the Catholic Church that came after Vatican II, but we have a group of conservative Catholics near us, and dont see any issues come up against them. This seems to be very extreme reaction, but maybe this is how the Pope deals with anyone who dont toe the line. Here is the latest..

"Vatican Declares Society of Saint Pius X Priests, Bishops Excommunicated After Unauthorized Ordinations
The Vatican has formally declared the ultraconservative Society of St. Pius X in schism after the traditionalist Catholic group consecrated four bishops without papal approval, escalating a decades-long conflict over church authority, the Latin Mass and the legacy of the Second Vatican Council.

In a decree issued Thursday, the Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith excommunicated the four newly consecrated bishops, as well as the two bishops who took part in Wednesday's ceremony at the society's seminary in Écône, Switzerland.

The Vatican called the consecrations a "schismatic act" and said the society, commonly known as SSPX, had created an intentional rupture with the Catholic Church.

The move marks one of the Holy See's strongest actions against the traditionalist movement since 1988, when SSPX founder Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre was excommunicated after consecrating bishops without the pope's consent....

Why did the Vatican declare SSPX in schism?
The latest confrontation followed a five-hour Mass on Wednesday at the SSPX seminary in Écône, where the society consecrated four new bishops before a crowd of about 15,500 people.

Under Catholic canon law, bishops may not consecrate new bishops without approval from the pope. The Vatican said Pope Leo XIV had urged SSPX to delay the consecrations "for the sake of the church's unity," but the society proceeded anyway.

In its decree, the Vatican said the consecrations amounted to a "schismatic act." It also warned Catholics who "adhere formally" to the SSPX that they are considered schismatic and therefore excommunicated.

What does excommunication mean?
Excommunication is the Catholic Church's most severe ecclesiastical penalty. The Vatican's sanctions went beyond the bishops directly involved in the ceremony. The decree also declared SSPX priests to be schismatic and excommunicated, and said the sacraments of confession and marriage administered by them are invalid. The measures reverse concessions granted in recent decades under Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, both of whom had sought ways to bring the society back into full communion with Rome......

And this sounds ominous...

"Catholic bishops across the United States are urging worshippers to stop attending Mass at Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) chapels after the Vatican declared the traditionalist group’s leadership excommunicated earlier this month amid a schism with the Catholic Church.

Archbishop Bernard Hebda of St. Paul and Minneapolis; Bishop Terry LaValley of Ogdensburg, New York; and Bishop James Johnston of Kansas City-St. Joseph, Missouri, were among those calling on Catholics not to participate in SSPX sacraments, urging them instead to return to churches in full communion with Rome.

Several bishops said participation in SSPX sacraments was now “forbidden” after Pope Leo XIV excommunicated the priestly fraternity’s six bishops and lay members who continued to “formally adhere” to it following the group’s unauthorized consecration of four bishops on July 1.

“The Holy See has made clear that the clergy of the society are now to be regarded as schismatic,” Bishop Frank Caggiano of Bridgeport, Connecticut, said in a statement on July 3. “This means that, from this day forward, the sacraments they celebrate are illicit and, most significantly for the faithful, the confessions they hear and the marriages at which they preside are considered invalid by the Church.” https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/bishops-urge-us-catholics-to-quit-sspx-mass-after-excommunication/ar-AA27ucny?ocid=msedgntp&pc=HCTS&cvid=6a4ea952864c47f9a5ba3e5aee67e6ae&ei=30

You missed the real import of issue, does the Pope have the power to send one to hell. That is the real question as 'Excommunication' by the Pope is declared to deny a person a means of the sacraments because of what the Catholic church considers heresy. To merely say that excommunication is to cut someone off from communion does not show the full meaning to a Catholic member, under their belief they are anathema and is being cut off from heaven, basically assigned to hell.

No one cares.

Popes have no power from God.
Popes only have man's power that idiot slaves give to them.

Obviously we all think not, and Catholics excommunicating Catholics? Maybe it'll be news if they return to the methods of the 4th century. Until then, who cares?

If Nietzsche were more Christian he might have written, "Thus Spaketh Maximos" -- quite the miracle without a tongue.

Asking if the Pope has the power to send people to hell is like asking if a voodoo witch doctor can shrivel up your manhood by pointing a finger bone at you.

I am not saying that this ever happened to me
