If you're searching for the "serious bible student"
I would opine that almost every here qualifies as a "serious bible student".

Almost, absolutely. I, of course, must be excluded for being the token Hebrews 10:26er. But the rest of you, you know, you're pretty good

?

Oh, this was the opinion of someone the other day who decided I had gone about ameliorating my GD in the wrong way.
Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.

Being able to make such an obscure reference seems to me to be able to qualify as a "serious bible student".

That's a popular one among the Christians, surely?!

Certainly shows the dearth of comprehensive, well rounded bible education today

Not being a Christian, I wouldn't know.

Salvation has no relationship to election. The nation of Israel was a chosen nation but surely not all Jews were saved. Jesus elected the 12 disciples and said that one of them is the devil. Not all disciples were saved. Election is to be placed in a privileged position in the plan of God, not including salvation since believing the Gospel message is optional.

A serious student in my definition is one who has disciplined himself to study and understand the original language of NT. He must have a very strong grasp of NT Greek.

What about Hebrew? Yeah or nah?

The peculiar thing is that the characters in the NT most certainly did not speak Greek. They spoke Aramaic, although they certainly were also fluent in Hebrew.

I once had a professor introduce his (postgrad) textual criticism class in Aramaic, and having finished, said in English, "if you didn't understand what I just said, leave". Not a single person left, but not a single person could tell him what he said -- and the class continued.

Why just Greek? Why not Hebrew, and Aramaic -- and I see Fenris has beat me to the punch, but here we are.

“Fenris punched Athanasius first!”

Did I do that right?
