A community about 15 minutes from my sister's town has been completely evacuated due to a wildfire. Map shows the front is in the town itself. I think they are on alert, but I think they'll be OK. Just a lot of smoke in town.

News reported that the fire was discovered on the 7th, and grew to 50km2 in just three hours, then doubled overnight.

You guys ok?

We are hundreds of km away so we are fine.

My sister last reported that threat to them is low. 19000 people were evacuated from the neighbouring town. Current fire extent looks like it has not grown much as it's up against a large lake. Hopefully they can preserveich of the town.

The tiny little community where the fire started is pretty much gone.

I finally got to turning a piece of striped wood, a couple of days ago I turned it from a block into a cylinder, and today I started to turn it into a goblet with a captive ring. Having drilled out the middle I need to build a steady rest so I can hollow it out without lots of chatter and the potential for the goblet to fly across the room at speed.

I did, it's just that this bowl sits atop a stick.

Today I found a pair of roller blades at the local thrift shop. I'm going to take the wheels off the bottoms and use them to make a steady rest.

Pending making a steady rest I turned another bowl from a piece of redbud. It's got a gorgeous grain pattern.

No progress made on anything measurable yesterday, the house was invaded by two little hurricanes. These particular hurricanes squealed with laughter when they got soaked during a big water fight :)

I started working on building a door frame but hit a problem, my planer is resting on my work bench, and I can't get at any of it because my old lathe is in the way. So I took a break, and turned another bowl out of another piece of redbud. It's got a glorious grain pattern.

Tomorrow we're expecting the hurricanes again. The weather forecast isn't great so I suspect we'll be making stuff in the kitchen and maybe doing whatever wood work seems like it's safe for small children to either join in or just watch.

We survived another encounter with the hurricanes. This is the last time we'll watch them before they go back to school - next week they're at their dad's. My wife and I are sad about that. But it means I can make more progress on what will be their room, now I don't have to clear it out and make everything safe every other week.

 New experience for me today

I watched a crew drill a well at my house

12 inch well bore casing 83 feet depth
8 inch shaft to depth of 200 feet

Is producing approx 4 gallons per minute .  They were hoping for 2.5 to 3 gpm, so turned out to be a good well
Well bore is filled 120 feet from bottom

Now they have to order the pump (stainless steel hand pump) now that they know how much tubing they will need

An entertaining and educational afternoon

Glad they got it on the first try. I know folks out here are always worried about getting it right the first time, drilling costs being what they are.

A simple side note. We have a set of wooden bricks that belonged to my wife's father, and possibly his father (we're not sure about that part, and nobody who could answer that question is still alive). The girls love playing with them but there are only so many and sometimes they fight over them. So I figured, I've got some big saws and woodworking tools, I could make some more.

I cut a few test pieces yesterday and, aside from not being painted, they look more or less identical. So before the girls are next here I may just make another big pile of them. I had hoped to make another little cart to carry them, much like the one the existing bricks are in, and have the girls help me make it even if that means nothing more than driving a few screws or something. But at this stage they don't really have the interest to stick with it for any length of time, so I think I'll just make the bricks myself and maybe revisit the cart idea later. Perhaps I'll go ahead and cut the pieces so if they are interested they can put some screws in.

I'm hoping that if they help make the cart, even if only incidentally, they will feel more of a sense of ownership of it than if I just make it and give it to them.

Recovering from a very busy day.  The Good News Ambassadors, our church touring choir, had a gig yesterday.  Which means I had to be at the church at 9AM, which is when I normally get up.  Which means I had to get up a lot earlier than normal.  Then rehearse and go over to the Councilor on the Aging for.the concert.  A very brief stop at McDonald's.  Then back to.the church to pick up my car.  Then run some errands.  Then, finally, back home to relax and finally eat a bit of breakfast.  Then I had to be back at church by 6PM for our first handbell practice of the season.  I'm debating on walking over to a small neighborhood supermarket to pick up something that I'm a bit short on.  But I may not.  I have enough to get me through tonight and The Ambassadors have a rehearsal tomorrow and I can pick it up while I'm out. Meanwhile, I'm thinking about talking with my primary care dr about seeing a cyropractor.  I'm having pain in my lower back and neck and I am having a bit of a problem standing for any length of time.  Also I have another eye injection next week.
May God bless you as you seek to do God's will

Shoveled and moved about 20-25 large wheelbarrows full of the tailings from the well to a point about 40 yards away in back of the house to fill in some low spots

Remind me not to do that again in the heat
