I made a mistake this morning.  Our church is having a "Free For All."  Picture a rummage sale without any money changing hands.  If you have something you want to get rid of bring it.  If you see something you like, take it.  Today is the day for people to bring in donations, along with the people to organize things.  I had a couple things I wanted to donate.so I brought them by.  I looked around a bit, as well as helped a bit.  While I was looking around I found a couple things I wanted.  It'll probably go back tomorrow to look around some more.  I'll probably end up getting more things.  I know I should say away from this, I always end up getting more than I leave.
May God bless you as you seek to do God's will

Two epic fails in the same turned bowl this evening.

I started with a log that had a couple of cracks but that I thought would be OK. Part way through turning it one of the cracks gave and a big chunk flew off. I was all set to dump the whole piece but instead I steadied it with the tailstock and used a fine cutter to remove the top couple of inches, getting rid of the cracked area. Then I hollowed out the rest of it and just tried to smooth out a rough section on the outside (that was my mistake, to revisit the outside once it was hollowed out), and despite trying to take a really fine cut just to smooth it out, I got a catch and half the bowl flew across the room.

So after four hours I created a honking great pile of shavings and a bowl that blew apart. Oh well, it's relaxing playing with the lathe even if it doesn't work out.

Stripping paint from a door.

At some point in the history of this door someone decided that what a vintage hand made antique door needed was to be painted the most unpleasant shade of pink you can imagine. So now it falls to me to spend hours with a heat gun removing the nasty pink paint in the hopes of restoring this door to its former glory, at which point I can make a frame for it and hang it in a bedroom doorway.

Rather annoyingly having the door in my basement so I can bring the heat gun to bear on it makes it difficult to get at my new lathe, so no bowls for a day or two :(

Camping. Wildfire smoke is not too bad here. Couple sections of highway are closed due to fires so considering alternatives to get home. That's not for a couple days so things could change.

Enjoy the camping!

I hope you enjoy it more than I've been enjoying stripping my door. It's a pretty low bar to clear....

Getting ready for the second (and final) honey harvest of the year

53 pounds earlier in the year

I expect about 40-45 pounds out of this time since it’s only been a couple of months

Then just wave the girls alone until the spring

Well I got stung by a bee or wasp yesterday and now my hand is all swollen and sore. I must be developing more of an allergy to them.

Ouch.... not what you want as a notable moment of the trip. Hope it clears up soon.

I finally got my door sanded to a point I'm happy to continue, and now it's stained, wiped and slowly drying.

We have our granddaughters tomorrow so lacquering it will probably have to wait until Wednesday.

An interesting encounter this afternoon. My wife and I took our young granddaughters to the beach at the local state park and after playing with them for a while in the lake and on the beach, a couple of older ladies commented on what good grandparents we were. That was good to hear, but all we were doing was simple stuff - building in the sand, burying the girls in the sand, running in and out of the lake with them and so on.

The door now has three coats of lacquer on it. Next up is to build a frame around it and hang it. That will have to wait because we have our granddaughters again tomorrow.

Talked at length with a young guy today who is Jewish and was age 10 when the current President was first elected.

He lent certain insight into how the newer generation is adapting to the reality of politcs. I am surprised at the growing numbers of Jewish people who are actually anti Zionists.

A community about 15 minutes from my sister's town has been completely evacuated due to a wildfire. Map shows the front is in the town itself. I think they are on alert, but I think they'll be OK. Just a lot of smoke in town.

News reported that the fire was discovered on the 7th, and grew to 50km2 in just three hours, then doubled overnight.
