I'm going to ask my GP to prescribe golf, so I can go more than 4 times a week.

My floor is wiped. Despite running the shop vac over the floor repeatedly it's amazing how much dust a damp cloth lifts, I had to rinse and wring the cloth several times over the course of wiping the floor. But now it's clean, it should be dry by now, and ready to be lacquered. So tomorrow I get to enjoy a fuzzy head from the fumes emanating from a 2 gallon bucket of lacquer.

Curiously the fumes don't really affect me much until I leave the area, only then do I become aware of how much I'd got used to it. My wife hates the smell of the fumes, even when she's not in the room I'm working on. Sadly the windows face into the prevailing wind so the best I can do is open a window in a different room and use a fan to pump out as much of the smell as I can manage.

Three coats, spaced by 6-7 hours, is just about doable within a single day. Which is good, because it means I don't have to sand it between coats. I really don't want to have to sand it between coats.

In unrelated news I met with the pastor of our church today and had a separate meeting with one of the elders. I've been tagged as possible teacher within the church so I've been exploring that as an option, figuring the best way forward and how to resolve issues where my views don't align with the general views within the church.

Both my boys really got into golf this past year. The daughter also works summers at the local course n the grounds crew so gets free golf membership. With the long summer nights they can be out there til 10.

Golf is like throwing sticks to a dog when you don't have a dog and have to go and get the stick yourself.

It's like mailing your slippers to the other end of the country and then spending several days going to get them back again.

My wider brush that I hoped to use to lacquer the floor didn't work very well, so I ended up lacquering the floor with a 2" wide foam brush. I can think of better ways to lacquer a floor but that's what I had available.

I went to the hardware store and found a very nice looking lambswool applicator, but for an oil based finish it needed to be rinsed in mineral spirits prior to use. Guess what I don't have, and what the hardware store didn't have in stock. So I bought a few 3" wide foam brushes and I'll have to make do with that. Hopefully it will be 50% faster this time around. We'll see.

If not for the fact I really, REALLY, don't want to have to sand the lacquer before applying another coat I'd wait until tomorrow when I need to be in town for church, and visit a larger hardware store to get some mineral spirits. I might do that anyway, so I've got everything ready when it's time to lacquer the adjacent (and larger) room.

I've got another couple of hours before it's time to put the next coat on. Oh joy.....

The wider brushes from my local hardware store are foam brushes but cost around $2 each, rather than $2 for a selection. But they do have one key advantage, they hold lacquer better and they don't fall apart after half an hour of using them. So note to self, it's worth paying the extra rather than trying to save a couple of bucks, foam brushes aren't created equal.

It's still a tedious process lacquering the floor with a 3" wide foam brush but at least it applies the lacquer fairly evenly so I don't have to keep going over everything. The first coat took me nearly two hours. The second coat is usually slower because it's harder to see the difference between wet and dry lacquer, but took me a little under 90 minutes.

The third and final coat goes on around 11pm. I'm thankful the clocks go back tonight so I can get that extra hour in bed between the final coat and church tomorrow.

Preparing to enjoy a day that doesn't involve being on my hands and knees working on the floor.

The final coat took me a whisker under an hour to apply. Thankfully the unheated part of the house didn't get too cold during the night, as i left the window fan running to suck as much of the smell out as I could. This morning I woke up to a nice dry floor and virtually no residual smell of solvents, which was nice. I probably won't walk on the floor for the duration of the day though, but it does look nice.

Next up is baseboards. I'll need to buy wood for that. I'll also need to buy wood to make window trims and a hefty slab of oak to make windowsills. I need to make five of those, although I only need two for this room.

One board for the new room is closer to being ready. I salvaged a baseboard that ran the entire length of the room and was in a really nice condition. Most of the other baseboards were pretty scabby. The nice long board was painted white for some reason, which is a desperate shame because it's a beautifully grained piece of yellow pine. This evening I took a scraper to it and got the paint off. The next step is to sand it, run a router along the edge to put a curve on it, and then stain and lacquer it. I need to see if I can find more yellow pine to cut the rest of the baseboards I'm going to need, and the window trim for when the new windows have gone in. If needs be I'll use regular white pine but really like the grain of yellow. And I'd really like to do all the baseboards at more or less the same time, rather than endlessly opening and closing my tins of stain and lacquer.

Today's fun was painting. I have a small closet, a kinda-sorta-random space, and a landing. I went through nearly two gallons of paint, and a few patches will need another coat, which is rather tedious. It's hard working in a space with inadequate light, and I can't put lights on because the electrics are disconnected because I'm painting around the sockets. So I do the best I can with a work light, and patch the bits I missed later. There aren't too many of them.

The next job is to reconnect a couple of power outlets, a couple of switches and lights, and then move in to the next room that needs attention. That means more wall wiping, more painting, and more epic fun sanding and lacquering another floor. Before I can fix up the floor I need to figure out how to move two radiators that weigh more than I do, which looks like it will pose something of a challenge. But at least I'll have light and power when it's time to do battle with the floor, so I'm not stuck to daylight hours.
