Hello and Shalom from El Salvador
« on: August 22, 2023, 08:52:23 PM »
Hello and Shalom,

I'm Messianic Rabbi Ben Avraham.  My wife and I live in El Salvador.  Our congregation is "Adat Salem" We are a small congregation and we put our Shabbat messages on YouTube under "CBC Salem".     I would love to share our weekly Torah readings with everyone on this site.  All from a Messianic perspective.  We are Born-again believers, our faith is in Yeshua/Jesus as LORD and Savior.

I was wondering if it is possible to open a sub-forum for "Messianic Judaism" or just "Messianic Bible/Torah teachings" That would be great.  If not, that's OK, just tell me where I could post the Bible/Torah teachings.

Will need to see what Tim thinks on this.

Agreed

I have yet to engage with a Messanic Jew that was not condescending toward those that didn’t feel the need to follow the cultural rules

Danger, Will Robinson.  You will be assimilated, confiscated, folded, mutilated, and spindled. Do not pass go.  Turn right on red. Third star to the right and full speed 'til morning.

He does not appear to engage with the members of the forum, even in topics that he started. He just makes a post and leaves, only to return a week or two later, make another post, and leave.

Edit to add: A quick google search reveals that he seems to be doing the same thing on another Christian message board as well.

That's a given with these kinds of posts/posters. Mostly wanted to see if he'd respond, and if not, consider if there's anything worth doing.

He's just here to lecture to us? How boring.

Even more boring if he doesn't even engage.

cultural rules
I mean those are laws in the bible, written by God. I wouldn't call them "cultural". They're part of God's covenant with the Jewish people.

Having said that, it's basic Christian theology that God has created a "new covenant" that has made the "old covenant" null and void.

I don't understand why someone would feel the need to straddle both religions. It's theological nonsense and just plain silly.

Exactly.  Most I’ve encountered don’t actually try to keep the 613 , they make up other stuff that sounds sort of Jewish, like demanding the Christians use Hebrew, and then pick and choose which of the 613 they will call “moral” and which they will call “cultural.”

You are correct that the hybrid is like a horse built by a committee… which is, by the way, the exact point of the Epistle to the Hebrews in the New Testament.

And then the bizarreness of taking specific Jewish practices and somehow Christianizing them.

Just like Mr Miyagi says!

Sharing and discussing alternative views can be productive, but a Bible discussion board should not be a venue for a virtual pulpit.
Standing before the Judgment Throne we will retain only two things from this life: what God gave us, and what we accomplished with it.

Like calling himself "Rabbi". A Rabbi is a specific title given to an individual who has been ordained by a Jewish religious institution after some course of study. Has he had such a course of study?

Or calling himself "Ben Avraham", "son of Abraham". First of all, in Judaism that term refers to converts to Judaism in a setting where the father's name is necessary (like being called up to the Torah). Is he a convert to Judaism? No, I'm guessing he's not Jewish at all. Secondly, he uses the Hebrew pronunciation of the name "Avraham" instead of "Abraham". I guess this makes it sound more authentically Jewish. You know, like sprinkling "Shalom" everywhere.
