Purim question
« on: March 07, 2023, 10:53:52 AM »
Mostly for Fenris...

Dude, is there a "shabbat goy" equivalent for Purim?

I have a few folks that likely need to be "Purged."

Help a Gentile out!

We just eat, drink, and be merry at the marvel of God's hidden and behind the scenes salvation of the Jewish people.

Phooey.

No "Bang Bang Maxwell's Silver Hammer" except for the first time.

I love the story of Esther.

I love the story of Esther.
It is amazing.

Best line in a book full of good lines is 7:9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the king, said, “A pole reaching to a height of fifty cubits stands by Haman’s house. He had it set up for Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king.” The king said, “Impale him on it!”

After the book of Esther is chanted on Purim, the following is sung in Hebrew by the congregants:

The rose of Jacob thrilled with joy and exulted when they beheld Mordechai garbed in royal blue.

You have always been their salvation, their hope in every generation, to make known that all who place hope in You shall not be put to shame, nor shall all those who trust in You be disgraced forever.

Cursed be Haman who sought to destroy me; blessed be Mordechai the Jew. Cursed be Zeresh the wife of Haman who terrified me; blessed be Esther who interceded on my behalf. Cursed be all the wicked; blessed be all the righteous; and may Harbona also be remembered favorably.

Because Harbona performed that one service of speaking up at the proper moment, he will be remembered favorably by Jews until the end of time.

Impaled.   (Insert Beavis and Butthead snickers here).  Impaled.

Excellent.

The King James says "hung on a gallows"

I like impaled much better...

Not only did Haman die on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai, he first suffered the indignity of honoring his intended victim by parading him through the crowded streets on one of the king's horses, and arrayed in royal attire.  Rushing home afterward, with his face hidden. I always get a chuckle thinking about that. The story Esther is both poignant and inspiring.
Standing before the Judgment Throne we will retain only two things from this life: what God gave us, and what we accomplished with it.

Some Purim and book of Esther strangeness:

Where the names of Haman's ten sons are written, three of the letters are written smaller than normal. Since Hebrew letters can also be used as numbers, those three letters total to 707.

On the Hebrew calendar, 1946, the year that the Nuremberg trials took place, was the year 5707.

Julius Streicher yelled "Purminfest 1946!" before being hung.

In the book of Esther, in chapter 9 she makes the request ‘If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews that are in Shushan to do tomorrow also as this day, and let Haman's ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.’ But they were already dead at that point. In addressing this point, a medieval Jewish commentator said "There is a tomorrow that is now, and a tomorrow which is later."

Of the 12 men were tried, Martin Bormann was tried in absentia, and Herman Goering committed suicide before he could be executed. So ten men were hung.

Could mean nothing, but it is interesting.
