It's been a couple of days since I got at the lathe, so I turned another bowl this evening. A friend of mine gave me some funky wood with a curious pattern, and it created an unexpected effect on the bottom of the bowl. I really like it, I wish I'd taken more of the wood now. But I've got enough to turn another three bowls. Maybe I'll keep one and sell three, or maybe I'll give them out as Christmas gifts or something.

Dropping off child number 2 at university for the first year

Child number one just wrote MCAT today, then off to 3rd year out east.

I finished the funky bowl. I couldn't sand it right away because the wood was wet, but today I could. So I sanded it smooth and applied my finish to it, and now it's absolutely gorgeous.

We have handbell practice tonight.  The last one before we preform at both services on Sunday.

I took the chance to burn a load of old documents that need to be destroyed rather than disposed. While I had the burn barrel going I also burned a load of scraps from the woodshop.

I was at something of a loose end this afternoon so turned a bowl out of a half log I had laying around, and then grabbed another log from the garage, cut it in half, and turned another bowl from it.

I'm trying to get a mixture of beeswax and mineral oil to come out to the consistency I want but after melting and re-setting it many times it's still far too solid. So I've got another melt going in a crock pot in the basement, hoping adding another 1/8 cup of oil to the mix will soften it enough to use. Ironically I recently discovered a finish I can buy for $13 in a 12oz bottle that may render the entire thing redundant, but we'll see.

I made a couple more bowls this afternoon. One was made from hemlock, I really don't like working with hemlock but I had some spare and wanted to test a new gouge on it. I still don't like it.

The second bowl was made from redbud, which cuts beautifully and the grain pattern is stunning. I'm starting to get the hang of this new bowl gouge, this bowl has the nicest finish I've managed in a while.
