Has anyone heard from Parson recently?  It's been a while since I heard from him and I wonder how he's doing?
May God bless you as you seek to do God's will

He might be tangled up in one of my piles of recovered cable.

Seriously, I haven't heard anything from him for eons.

No work on building or destroying either house yesterday.

I did have a piece of irregularly shaped wood approximately 9 inches square and 5 inches thick. I wanted to cut it into an accurate square and then cut it into two pieces about two inches thick, so I could turn it into two square plates. Cutting something that size is tricky, neither my big miter saw nor my table saw can cut through anything that thick and being irregularly shaped makes it hard to do much of anything with it. In the end I cut it with the miter saw and finished the cuts with a hand saw, then cut it in half most of the way through on the table saw by cutting it, turning it 90 degrees and cutting it again, and then cutting the last inch or so from the very middle with a hand saw. I thought my miter saw would cut through it, but the nut that holds the blade in place put a limit on the thickness I can cut that I hadn't considered, and so my first attempts were thwarted.

Now it's small enough that my miter saw can handle it I can cut the two pieces to more accurate squares, ready to put them on the lathe. I'd like to make two square plates that at least kinda sorta match.

The first square plate came off the lathe yesterday. I'm mostly happy with it, it needs a little more sanding than I can do on the lathe and I had a little bit of blowout in a couple of places but I think I can clean it up. Maybe today I'll make thhe other one. I did make over five gallons of shavings in the process. It's surprising how much a small piece of wood becomes when shaving it away a small piece at a time.

I'm not thrilled about the edge blowouts when turning something square, so I turned a smaller piece into a round bowl. This one is the nicest I've made so far, I turned it and sanded it, then sanded away the tenon on the bottom (I really should get a big chuck so I can cut it off on the lathe, which would be so much quicker), and then gave it three coats of oil. It soaked up the oil much faster than I expected, so three coats were done and absorbed within half an hour.

Fun With Windows.

Trying to swap a storm window for a bug screen I managed to push the entire storm window frame out of its fitting at my daughter's new house. It turned out some of the wood trim had perished, so today's task was addressing the storm window. First job was to get the storm window out, which meant some force with a pry bar because all the screws had a dozen coats of paint over them. Then I could sand everything, pry away the nasty perished trim and replace it, replace a load of perished caulking, and repaint everything.

Tomorrow's job is to put the storm window back, when I can go and buy some new screws suitable for outdoor use. When my daughter got home from work she loved what she saw.

I've had quite the week. Went in for a routine colonoscopy and started having severe stomach pains the next day. Went to VA emergency, was admitted, and had my gallbladder removed the same day. Later, I developed a nasty bloodborne bacteria and was pumped with antibiotics for the entire week. Having an aortic valve replacement in 2014 made me particularly vulnerable to the bacteria, but a series of blood cultures showed it had not "vegetated" on my valve. Was finally sent home yesterday with a strong antibiotic and related meds. I'm experiencing some intestinal issues due to the antibiotic, and of course, soreness in the surgery incision sites, but all in all, am recovering well.
Standing before the Judgment Throne we will retain only two things from this life: what God gave us, and what we accomplished with it.

Stage 2 of the window project is now complete. The storm window is back in place, screwed in and with nice fresh caulking all the way around it.

While I was there I took some measurements for other windows - window air conditioning units don't fit very well in windows designed long before such things even existed, so I'm going to cut some mounts that will properly fill the space around the window units.

Later in the afternoon I dug out a chunk of log and turned another bowl. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with all the bowls, and I still have a big stack of wood in the garage.

There's a gift shop just down the road from me, I might stop in and see if they would be interested in selling them for me. It would mean giving them a commission but would also mean I don't have to stand around at the market wondering if anyone will buy them, and if I'll sell enough of them to cover the costs of being at the market.

It's weird at a lot of markets, people will complain that $5 is too much for something hand made but then stand in line for 15 minutes to pay $5 for a big cookie that's gone in a couple of minutes. Or they'll see something hand made and complain that it costs more than some mass produced Chinese junk. And then you get the ones who look at a few items and just when you're expecting them to either put them all back and say they'll think about it, or put them all back except the cheapest one, they decide to buy all of them and pay cash. I like those people.

It always makes me think of the people who leave a Bible tract that looks like a folded $20 as a tip. It seems to me that all you're doing is associating Scripture with disappointment and "that (expletive) didn't even leave a real tip". I've never left such a tract but think that if I wanted the message to be taken seriously it would need to be paired with something the server can actually use to pay their bills. Like, you know, some real money.

It's funny seeing people who will pay through the nose for garbage but then reject quality stuff because it's "too expensive".
