Apparently, in Canada, uploading home security video that captures porch pirates in the act is a violation of the thieves' privacy. Yet another example of skewed priorities in the topsy-turvy world we live in.

Standing before the Judgment Throne we will retain only two things from this life: what God gave us, and what we accomplished with it.

Well, yes, obviously the person coming onto my porch isn't planning to steal my packages. They just want to make sure they are adequately protected from inclement weather by taking them indoors. And since they can't get into my house they are very kindly taking the packages to their own home (at the own expense, let it be noted) so that they don't get wet if it should rain between their selfless act and my return home.

Someone steals your property and posting evidence of the crime makes you liable. Somewhat akin to getting punched in the nose and being charged with assault for hitting the assailant in the fist with your nose.

Just being old Smokey’s advocate….

Why would you post your video on line?
Danger, Will Robinson.  You will be assimilated, confiscated, folded, mutilated, and spindled. Do not pass go.  Turn right on red. Third star to the right and full speed 'til morning.

Why not? I have a video retention subscription with my Ring doorbell camera, and the Ring community regularly posts video of porch pirates, as well as shady characters lurking around homes and cars at night.

When you think about it, home security cameras are surveilling your property. If someone is recorded committing a crime on the premises, that's on them. Cops routinely rely on security cameras when investigating a neighborhood crime.

So logically when the police post images or videos of suspects they are also violating the privacy rights of the suspects?

I would think the owner of the surveillance video would have the legal right to make it public, whether for police investigation purposes or general submission, as in the case of Ring's Neighborhood app.

Maybe to show neighbors what specific criminals and suspicious characters look like--which is the camera owner's prerogative. The perps have no business being on private property, and I personally don't give a rip about their privacy.
