The Gathering Place
They gathered there each year
Under the ancient tree
From places far and near
Family and friends to see
It was the Gathering Place
Where they spoke of Him
Sharing in His Grace
And praising God in hymns
Then as the years began to pass
The Gathering Place was dying
Until there were only two at last
Holding hands and crying
A very old man and a very old woman
Speaking their love of Him
Sitting close hand in hand
Knowing they’d not meet again
Reflecting on the years of past
And meetings filled with cheer
A parting kiss would be their last
No one would come next year
The ancient tree put forth no leaves
When spring brought flowers of red
And a mighty wind toppled the tree
The Gathering Place was dead
