Superman's Jewish roots
« on: October 23, 2025, 05:33:33 PM »
Superman was the creation of two young Jewish men, Jerry Siegel (writer) and Joe Shuster (artist). Through their collaboration, the caped crusader debuted in Action Comics #1, published April 18, 1938. The Jewish undertones begin with the future superhero being sent away by himself as an infant to preserve his life--which brings to mind Moses' experience as an infant. Then there's the child's Jewish-sounding name, "Kal-El", who was the son of "Jor-El".

Given the adversity and persecution experienced by European Jews of the era, it's hard to miss the timeliness of a powerful deliverer who stands for truth and justice in a time of crisis. (One can hardly overlook the unmistakable messianic overtones). The narrative emphasizing a lost homeland (Krypton), and the preservation of its culture/values through Kal‑El also mirrors Jewish themes of cultural survival in the course of assimilation.

It's no exaggeration to say the entire superhero genre developed by Marvel and DC Comics, representing a hundred billion dollar industry, owes a debt to two young Jewish boys growing up in Cleveland Ohio. From his tight, form-fitting costume and iconic cape, to his musculature and superpowers and heroics, superman started it all.
Standing before the Judgment Throne we will retain only two things from this life: what God gave us, and what we accomplished with it.

In Hebrew, the phrase "Kal El" means "the voice of God".

I love this part.
