They wrote out the vowels, lol. Yes, that's obviously how biblical Hebrew works. Maverick Bible scholar Nehemia Gordon should stick to writing fiction.

Not "Lord" "I am" nor any of the others!

Finding Hebrew manuscripts with vowels added some centuries into the NT era is not an indication of anything, in my opinion. Hebrew writing didn't have vowels, though I would have to defer to my brother on how certain sounds may have been "guided" by Hebrew consonants.

I should think that within a single culture pronunciation would be a simple matter of communication within the society. More interacting cultures would likely need vowels to help different societies to properly pronounce their words?

At any rate, a specific pronunciation seems irrelevant to the matter of communicating who God is, and how He is different from other gods. It wouldn't be much different from hearing different accents communicating the same text.

Those who read often adopt their own mental pronunciation of words, having never heard how those words are normally pronounced. But if the pronunciation was close to the phonetic pronunciation of the word, we would all know what the speaker means.

I’ve always called you Jesus
You’ve always called me Sonny

Danger, Will Robinson.  You will be assimilated, confiscated, folded, mutilated, and spindled. Do not pass go.  Turn right on red. Third star to the right and full speed 'til morning.

This thread is on a whole other level of facepalm. Closing.
