Title: The ECF and theosis
Post by: ProDeo on December 29, 2024, 01:06:42 PM
https://new-god-argument.com/support/christian-authorities-teach-theosis.html

I came across this link and I can't believe the ECF made all those statements becoming a god or worse God.

Is it a fake?

Given the very first quote has "gods" in quotes, and is taken from a broader argument wherein Martyr is attempting to prove that Christ is God, what do you imagine the ECFs are saying? Certainly not theosis in every instance, least of all as asserted.

I read it as us being the "sons of God" and being transformed into the image of Jesus. Surely they are not promoting the original lie from satan "you shall be as God"

In both Catholicism and Eastern Orthodox, the Eucharist via transubstantiation or "real presence" facilitates theosis. Even sanctification is viewed as a form of thesois, and I really can't argue against the thought. We are either becoming more God like or not. But there is no completion of this in this life. I think this is the sense of the ECF except for the strange doctrine of the Eucharist and the partaking of the Divine Nature by eating the real flesh and drinking the real blood of Jesus.
