Since the establishment of our republic, there has been contention based on disparate ideology, but the two-party system seemed more beneficial than detrimental. For generations, it's been a given that Republicans and Democrats were at odds over political and social issues. And for a brief time in the aftermath of the events of 9/11, there was a camaraderie as most people forgot their differences, and saw each other as fellow Americans attacked by a common enemy. But that didn't last long, as politics and social issues again created strife and enmity, which has grown more pronounced over the years.
But over the last decade we've witnessed an unprecedented degree of division and hostility among the citizenry. The USA is essentially split into two factions at war with one another. A recent survey revealed the extent of the bad blood that exists between Americans today. The poll showed an alarming percentage of both Republicans and Democrats not only view the opposing party as a threat to the nation, but felt violence was justifiable in opposing the other's agenda. This is the stuff of which civil wars are made. And this discord is happening at a time when our leadership is indifferent to the national debt being at the tipping point. "Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so the hope of the godless will perish".

Maybe democracy has had its best time, nothing surprises me any longer. Autocracy and the suppression that automatically comes with it (Russia, China) is an alternative to survive. Hello 1984.
May God have mercy on us.

Democracy has never worked
Which is why we have a currently being ignored constitutional republic.

Most of America is armed, despite all the anti-gun spinning and their efforts. Meaning, if a totalitarian one-world government must come to fruition (as prophesied in Scripture), America as a "free" Constitutional Republic (We the People), must have it's Constitution eradicated. Mainly to get rid of the 2nd Amendment. America as a whole must be destroyed for any one-world government to come to pass.
If we don't destroy ourselves, war on a worldly scale has great possibility to bring America to it's knees in defeat.

Democracy failed in Greece when BC was still cool. 8) Anything called or claiming to be democracy since has been representative, likely a Republic (e.g. Rome), and not actually democratic since it, too, would fail (democracy being a fancy word for mob rule, in practice).
The West is surely becoming more authoritarian than it has been in the recent past, but I think part of that is IngSoc, and the other is the prevalence of social media and its gift at destroying social cohesion, so laws to protect social whatever, like what China has, are probably going to become more common.
No more monoculture, lots of very many little bubbles of social cohesion. Bad bad times.

Democracy had quite a good day here in Poland just over a week ago.
We had an election, we had record voter turnout and, despite getting a hung result, we didn't have any riots in the street afterwards.
It's certainly preferable to the system that was in place up to 1989.

Poland is not a democracy

Yep.
A quote from the foxnews link Sojourner posted -
Among Biden supporters, 41 percent now believe violence is justified "to stop [Republicans] from achieving their goals." An almost identical percentage, 38 percent, of Trump supporters now embrace violence to stop Democrats.
Please tell me foxnews is -- let me put it mildly - overreacting.

Nope
War is coming
-
I'm curious what will happen in say, October 2024, if Biden is trailing badly in the polls.

Generation Z is relatively quiet yet overwhelmingly progressive, holding recent, scandal plagued authoritarian, anti-democratic trends in contempt.
Biden or whomever; relatively immaterial.
In 2016 the right was in comfortable leadership.
That leadership was squandered and diminished through scandal upon scandal. Threats of war cannot, will not change that.
