so are we then to read rev 13 as follows?
18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is [Six hundred][threescore and six].
meaning the 600 is apart from the 66 ....... the threescore and six was the image Nebuchadnezzar built. Thus this counterfeit Davids image, image of the beast, would be the uture tabernacle 600. it's door and path is 6 cubits wide and 100 long. the door is 6 cubits wide and 60 cubits high. 600 was also the number davids men.
so all this time we were after 666 when we should be looking for 600 + 66.

The best interpretation I've ever heard, from my perspective, is the idea that 666 is the numerical value of the original King of Rome. I don't know his name off hand, but that's what I heard.
I heard that people of that time would've seen the connection between the number and the original King of Rome, which is a cryptic way of saying 666 represents the Kingdom of Rome. Jesus was perhaps avoiding inciting the Romans by spelling their name out literally. Instead, he used cryptic identifiers like, "a city that rules over the earth," the 6th and 7th kingdoms in the NT age, and "7 hills." (Rev 17)
I really got tired of hearing prophecy teachers trying to pinpoint who 666 belonged to, as if God wanted us to enter into guessing games! Does God really want us to go around suggesting such and such a person is the Antichrist?
But I do think we can see European Civilization pass on the Roman Imperial Tradition and return to paganism. At the same time we are watching it return to a hatred for Religion--at least the Christian kind.

The Catholic church got the name "Martin Luther" to equal to 666. Of course they had to fudge it and had to spell his last name as "Luthera" ("It's the Latin form, get it?!!!!")

Yes, "Nero Caesar" totals 666.
