In General / Who's Watching?
« on: May 05, 2024, 02:54:50 PM »
In her sermon today our pastor mentioned how people were watching us.  It reminded me of an example of this.

When I was growing up my dad and I were very involved in The Lay Witness Mission movement. (That was a lay renewal program.  I will be glad to tell you more if you want.)  My 10th was Dad's 20th.  We have the dubious honor of having been on the team for the only Mission that the church voted as a failure.  I happen to know it wasn't.  My dad told me about what happened years later.  During that weekend there were 3 boys that were always together.  If you saw one you saw the other two.  Two were team members and the other was from the town.  And I know for a fact that the team members never once stopped to consider whether or not they should include their friend from the town in everything, whether it was the sessions or the team meetings.  They just included him.  I know that they didn't think about it because I was one of them.  I found out years later that our including him changed his life.  Be careful what you do, or say.  You never know who may be watching, or when God will choose to use you.

How do I know God exists?

How do I know God Exists? I would answer with two words. Two names actually. Walter James Cloud and Caroline Elizabeth Harrison Robbins Cloud. The first was my dad. The second is my wife. I say is even though she has been dead for several years because she is as much a part of my life as she was when she was alive.

Both of these people were incredible gifts to me from a loving God who through them showed me how much He loved me. Dad and I were very close and when he died I didn’t know how I would get through it. But God lifted me up from the miry clay of grief, partly through the healing arms of my wife.

To understand the rest you have to know a bit about Caroline and me. To say that we were not a normal couple would be a gross understatement of monumental proportions. After all, how could we be “normal” considering when we got married I was 36 and she was 72? And right from the start we were so much a part of each other that we read each other’s minds, CONSTANTLY. Not a week went by, and hardly a day, when one of us didn’t say something that caused the other to respond “Get out of my mind.” Caroline was my partner in every sense of the word. A lot of married couples refer to their spouses as “my other half.” Caroline really was.

When Caroline died it was hell. How could it not be? And absolutely NOBODY could understand. How could they? They tried (and I’m glad they did). But I’ve never met anyone even close to our situation.

So how do I know God is real? Simple I’ve been through HELL!!! More than once, in fact. And when I had sunk to the lowest pit of hell, and it was threatening to bury me forever, I looked over and found I was not alone. Christ was there to pick me up, and lift me out, and place me in my loving Father's arms. And He held me in his arms, and cradled me to His chest. And He whispered in my ears that I was His child and He loved me more than I could possibly imagine.

How do I know God is real? HOW COULD I NOT?

Prayer Requests / Be praying for our drama team
« on: February 12, 2024, 11:25:27 PM »
We are in the middle of a particularly busy time.  We are currently working on an Alice in Wonderland Tea. It's a fun, and very wacky, piece.  Largely improvised.  We are doing this as a fundraiser.  I'm playing The March Hare.  As soon as we get done with that we have to gear up for Easter.  We are reprising The Living Last Supper that we originated last year.  Good news and bad news on that.  On the good side, some of the cast from last year will be back.  Our director officially asked me to recreate my role of James.  And I've already started reviewing my lines.  Unfortunately, not all of the original cast can come back.  And the Last Supper isn't the only thing we will.be doing. I'm looking forward to it.  It was a very moving experience on both sides of the footlights.  Please keep us in your prayers.

The Angels Sang

When someone tells the story of the first Christmas inevitably they come to where the angels announce the birth of the Christ child to the shepherds. It is almost a forgone conclusion that the angels will be singing. Almost inevitably someone will mention that the Bible doesn’t say anything about singing. In one since they are correct. The Bible doesn’t actually say they sing.

But I put it to you. How could they not sing. As a musician I know the power music holds. Music speaks to our hearts and souls in a way that nothing else can. Let me give you a few examples to show you what I mean.

Let us start out simply. How about the song Taps. Four notes. Eight measures. What could be simpler. Yet who among us can say that those four notes, played slowly over the grave of a fallen hero does not cause a tightening of the chest, a lump in our throat, and a tear in the eye. Certainly not me.

Or on the other side. Stop and listen to a band playing John Phillip Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever. Is there a heart among us that can honestly say that those strains fail to stir your heart and make you want to move. And while it was written for a war way before my time, I can’t remain still when I hear a group singing Over There. I just have to join in.

The same is true when I hear Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. It is impossible for me not to sing. I absolutely can’t NOT sing. The same is true of the Star Spangled Banner or America the Beautiful. The list is practically endless.

No, music is powerful. Music can express a sorrow so powerfully that someone else hearing it will feel their own heart break, even without the benefit of words. Music can express a joy so strong that Just hearing it will fill someone else’s heart. Music can stir someone into action or calm someone’s fear, anxiety or anger. All with or without words, and even if you can’t understand what is being said.

Yes I KNOW the angels sang that night. They couldn’t help themselves. Their hearts were to full. Their joy over the birth of Christ was too great. They had to sing. They couldn’t help themselves.

In General / Christmas stories needed
« on: November 22, 2023, 10:35:55 AM »
As some of you know, I  occasionally play Santa during the Christmas season.  I am looking for Christmas stories for Santa to tell.  I can, and will, tell the story of the Incarnation.  I also have the story of The Kneeling Santa.  I also have a DVD that Carmen made called The Christmas Candle.  So I can pull that story off the DVD.  However if anyone has a print copy of it, I would appreciate it.  What I can use are more Christmas stories that Santa can tell.  You can post them here or send them to me via email or DM.  Your help is appreciated.

In General / New Santa gig
« on: July 12, 2023, 10:41:59 AM »
I just got a Santa gig.  It's playing Santa at a ladies club Breakfast With Santa.  It doesn't happen until December, so I have plenty of time to do any preparation needed.  While doing some research I discovered a company that sells Santa scents and I'm thinking about getting some to enhance the experience.  The trouble is I can't decide which one, or ones, to use.  They come in both cologne and beard elixirs, so it is possible to use more than one.  The scents are below.  Which do you think I should use?

CinnaClaus

Freshly grated cinnamon right from the sticks. True cinnamon scent like in Grandma’s kitchen during the holidays. Energizing and enticing aroma.

CocoaSanta

Warms with your skin to provide a rich creamy and sweet fragrance with plenty of cocoa. The soul yearns for chocolate. It’s the ultimate indulgence of life. One of Santa’s favorite beverages to have with cookies!

Mrs.C'sCookies

Fresh baked cookies out of the oven. Can you smell these buttery cookies and the vanilla frosting? Santa can hardly wait to have some!

NorthPineSanta

Clean and crisp balsam base. Reminds one of a wonderful walk in the northern woods with ice and snow in the air. A woodsy and earthy undertone with cold crisp mountain air to top it off. North Pole fresh!

SantaBaby

A fresh dry powdery fragrance to calm and sooth. This fragrance brings to mind warm skin and hugs with a hint of lavender. This scent can help lull small ones to sleep and instill a sense of safety and security.

SweetSanta

Freshens the spirit and invigorates the mind. The scent will have you remembering the holidays all year long with a twinkle in your eye. This fragrance will have children holding out their hands in anticipation of a candy cane!

GingerClaus

Freshly baked and decorated Gingerbread cookies bring memories of Christmas baking.

CiderClaus

Warm apple cider with a hint of fresh cinnamon sticks. A favorite warm beverage to enjoy during the cold winter months.

ChimneyClaus

Smoky warm crackling firewood. Special customer requested fragrance to use on Christmas Eve. Santa does come down the chimney after all!

CCSanta

Chocolate covered cherries just waiting to be bitten into! Simply delicious!

ElfDoodles

Everyone loves Snickerdoodles and these are made special by the Elves!! This scent is “fresh out of the oven” rich and yummy: caramelized cream, maple notes with rich sweet butter followed by scrumptious French vanilla, cinnamon and sweet sugary crystals.

ElfNoggin

The long awaited decadent seasonal holiday drink. Rich whole milk, heavy cream, eggs, creamy thick vanilla, cloves, and freshly ground nutmeg make this the perfect drink to relax by the fire after a long Christmas Eve trip.

Prayer Requests / Pray for the drama team at our church

This Thursday, Maundy Thursday, our drama ministry is preforming The Living Last Supper.  I'm James.  We have been working hard to make the Last Supper come to life.  It is proving to be a very moving experience.  It promises to leave everyone, cast included, without a dry eye in the place.

I put this here because it seemed to fit best here to me.  If there is a better place feel free to move it.

Today during church an Idea came to me for a series of meditations or a study.  Not sure where to go with it but it sounds interesting.  If anyone wants to run with this, or add to it.  Go ahead.

Christmas 2021

How do you see Him?
This Savior born this day.
How do you see Him?
This new born child?

Do you see Him fair of face
With silky hair
And easy grace
Is that the way you see his face?

Or does He have a well tanned face
With muscled arms
And calloused hands
Does this describe how you see His face

Do you see Him
With skin of golden hue
Or was it red or olive hue
Is that how you see him?

Were his eyes
Blue or brown
Were they round
Or of an almond shape

How you see Him matters not
The details aren't important
The fact he came to save us
Is the truth of all the age.

Christmas 2022

Little babe
Asleep in the hay
Born to take
Our sins away.

Loving Savior
Nailed to a cross
Dieing to pay
The price for our sins

Mighty God
Come to earth
Come to take us
Home to you
