Just Bible / Lemme see if I have this right
« on: April 17, 2024, 05:47:37 PM »
Yesterday in Church in a Bible group, 2 subjects I disagreed on, but I kept my big mouth, I want to be sure first. IOW, I can use some advice.

Topic - negative emotions and what to do about it. Excellent topic. We are using the book and videos of "Freedom in Christ". But I did not like the Bible passages they used for the conclusions.

Subject one - Psalm 109:6-15 - King David about his enemies :

6 Appoint a wicked man against him; let an accuser stand at his right hand.
7 When he is tried, let him come forth guilty; let his prayer be counted as sin!
8 May his days be few; may another take his office!
9 May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow!
10 May his children wander about and beg,  seeking food far from the ruins they inhabit!
11 May the creditor seize all that he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his toil!
12 Let there be none to extend kindness to him, nor any to pity his fatherless children!
13 May his posterity be cut off; may his name be blotted out in the second generation!
14 May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out!
15  Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth!

------

And the book stated, be honest to God, if you feel this way then just say it. If David could pray in this way and it became Scripture then so you can pray.

I was astonished. And I thought, wait, is this not OT thinking? An eye for an eye. It was allowed in the OT, the old covenant. But Jesus turned it on, love your enemies, the new covenant. We are not allowed to pray like this. Am I right?

Just Bible / The Battle For The Mind
« on: April 08, 2024, 02:52:27 PM »
In Church we were discussing a topic that until now had not much of my attention, it's about the level of influence the devil might have in our daily life.

In 1 Chronicles 21 we read -
1 Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, “Go, number Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me a report, that I may know their number.”

....

7 But God was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel.

So (as the text reads) the devil planted an (at first glance an innocent) thought in the mind of David, displeasing God and with big consequences if you read the whole chapter.

I am pretty sure if David would had known he was seduced by the devil he would rejected the thought.

So the devil himself can put lies even in Christian minds guarded by the Holy Spirit?

And secondly, the devil is a created being, not able to be at multiple places in the same time. Or we must believe there is some basic truth in the Screwtape Letters from CS Lewis billions of Wormwood's are trying to mess with our Christian minds.

On one of hard disks I rediscovered a game I played ~12 years ago and also became popular by my grandchildren. It's a nice shooting game, good graphics, fun story and I started to play it again.

Story from the website -

Chickens. For centuries we have oppressed them, grilling, roasting, stewing, and stuffing them in buns. We should have known the time would come for us to pay. And it did.

Intergalactic chickens invaded Earth, seeking revenge for the oppression of their earthly brethren. They came out of nowhere, and everywhere. It was only you who managed to repel the invasion, and saved humanity from an eternity of servitude.

Then, things got serious. The intergalactic chickens assaulted the solar system and tried make sure that every planet was inhabited exclusively by chickens. Yet again, it was you who took the world's fate in your ketchup-stained hands and saved the day.

But it isn't over yet. Once more, it's time to don your non-stick egg-repulsing helmet and fight for our ancestral right to omelettes. Only you can make a difference. Will you succeed? Will the future of chicken burgers be secure? Or will you end up as part of the menu in a galactic chicken restaurant?

After all these years I am still at place 6 as "opi", the pet name of my grandchildren.

Theology / Is free will a failed concept?
« on: January 14, 2024, 03:23:13 PM »
Just brainstorming.....

We know about the garden, the fall of A&E.

We read - Then the LORD God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil.

Assuming one of us means all of heavenly creatures then all already knew the difference between good and evil.

How did all the creatures know, we read about fallen angels, thus angels have free will. So this could be the reason. Maybe, maybe not, but we have 2 cases of free will that end up in sin.

----------

A bit of Plato

The Cycle of Opposites

The first argument is based on the cyclical interchange by means of which every quality comes into being from its own opposite. Hot comes from cold and cold from hot: that is, hot things are just cold things that have warmed up, and cold things are just hot things that have cooled off. Similarly, people who are awake are just people who were asleep but then woke up, while people who are asleep are just people who were awake but then dozed off.

And so it is with good, it has its opposite which is evil. Love finds its opposite in hate or indifference. Justice finds its opposite in injustice, and so on. Obedience vs disobedience. There seems to be always an opposite.

Will sin be always be on the watch when we are with the Lord?

In Revelation the "tree of life" is mentioned 4 times and the need to eat from it.

Or will God say that He tried 2 times and has showed mankind and angels sufficiently that free will sooner or later will lead to another rebellion and that He wants to take away our free will.

Ouch....

ESV | KJV
2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread.1  4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

YLT
9 thus therefore pray ye: 'Our Father who [art] in the heavens! hallowed be Thy name. 10 'Thy reign come: Thy will come to pass, as in heaven also on the earth. 11 'Our appointed bread give us to-day. 12 'And forgive us our debts, as also we forgive our debtors. 13 'And mayest Thou not lead us to temptation, but deliver us from the evil, because Thine is the reign, and the power, and the glory--to the ages. Amen.

Where is the bold coming from in the YLT ?

Note, the bold is also in my Dutch Bible, I don't know any better, I am much surprised.

Theology / Marriage
« on: November 01, 2023, 04:22:57 AM »
Mark 10:6 - But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’  ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife,  and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh.

And the question is, when are a man and a woman married in the eyes of God?

My view and I am not certain -

I haven't found any word from God in Scripture it requires a ceremony as obligation. Needless to say it's wise and good to have one, ask God in the presence of people for a blessing of your marriage and have a party thereafter.

And so I think -

1. When a couple decides to go through life together and the love is sealed with sexual intercourse.

2. There are a couple of OT texts that even indicate situations of sexual intercourse is enough for God.

On [2] -

Deut 22:28-29 - If a man meets a virgin who is not betrothed, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found, then the man who lay with her shall give to the father of the young woman fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife, because he has violated her. He may not divorce her all his days

Exodus 22:16 - If a man seduces a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he shall give the bride-price for her and make her his wife.

It seems to me the act of sexual intercourse is seen by God as a fuse between 2 souls that can't be broken, like being born again is a fuse between God and one of His creatures that can't be broken. As such it is meant.

Marriage is an ever returning topic and if I am asked for my opinion I like to give a correct answer.

In General / Sometimes the world with 7.5 billion people is a small place
« on: October 23, 2023, 06:16:48 AM »
Just received this - Amir Ban is in a bad way. His sister and husband had to hide for 30 hours in the safe room while the Hamas were massacring the people outside. They were in Kibbutz Be'eri, where 112 people were slaughtered, "some by techniques described by De Sade" (Amir). His nephew Avida Bakhar was severely wounded (lost a leg), as was his daughter, 13. Avida's wife Dana and their son Camel (15) were butchered.

I knew Amir very well from the past, we met in foreign countries playing in tournaments against each other with our chess brainchild.

The news about his loss makes me feel sad.

Prayer Requests / Prayer for my wife
« on: September 15, 2023, 05:31:45 AM »
One year ago my wife was diagnosed with cancer in her toe, the toe was removed and all signs were on green after that. This morning we got an alarming phone call from Amsterdam, the cancer is back, now in the lungs. Monday she gets a ct-scan in Amsterdam and Wednesday we go to Amsterdam again to hear the result and treatment(s).

I want to ask your prayers for her, for healing and her peace of mind.

Thank you.

Clean Christian Humor / As seen on my TV
« on: August 04, 2023, 02:11:38 PM »
Yesterday my wife and I watched one of those pulp shows on Dutch television. We usually don't do that but by accident we saw that it was about "The Hague" the city we are both raised. Topic, the typical "The Hague" accent and the directness of the traditional inhabitants in one-liners.

So we saw a woman taxi driver while driving several people to their destination making conversation.

Man on the backseat - do you have children?
Woman taxi driver - no, I don't want to make the same mistake as my parents.

Another man stepped in, about 60-65 year. Conversation started, at some point:

Woman taxi driver - do you still make love to your wife?
60-65 old man - no, bad for the climate, I breath too much CO2 then.

Since the year ~2000 I don't go the church any longer, reason, I fell asleep too many times during the sermon. Something changed recently, my son in law came to the Lord, he got baptized and we together follow 12 week introduction course called "In search of God" organized by a church in our neighborhood. I go with him because he is totally new to Christianity and want to protect him against possible false teachings. But fortunately the church is very much okay. So I am back in church, phew...

The church is an active one, the main focus is preaching the Gospel and that seems to go very well, the above course I mentioned above is in its 7th week and still has ~35 participants. Although not much new for me personally I am already looking forward to chapter 8. That's odd because I am not a person people, but the whole atmosphere is very accessible, no judgements.

My favorite speaker has his own Dutch and English YouTube channel, it's worth a try.

Sam Harris made a case against miracles. He talks about how common miracle claims are in the modern world. He contrasts the miracles of Jesus with supposed present-day miracles. Since reasonable people generally don’t believe that the miracles attributed to Saita Said Baba are real, we should especially don’t believe miracle claims from 2000 years ago.  In this video I will show you that Harris is wrong and that a compelling case can be made that Jesus rose from the dead.

Theology / Psalm 82
« on: November 02, 2022, 04:05:34 PM »
A Psalm of Asaph.
1 God has taken his place in the divine council; in the midst of the gods he holds judgment:
2 “How long will you judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? — Selah
3 Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;  maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
4 Rescue the weak and the needy;  deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”
5 They have neither knowledge nor understanding, they walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you;
7 nevertheless, like men you shall die, and fall like any prince.”
8 Arise, O God, judge the earth; for you shall inherit all the nations!

As for the questions -

divine council; in the midst of the gods, what is Asaph talking about?

I said, “You are gods, sons of the Most High, all of you, who is speaking, God or Asaph? and to whom? I suppose God to the divine council full of gods?

nevertheless, like men you shall die, gods (like men) that die?

If it wasn't for the Lord Who quoted from Psalm 82 (John 10:34) I am left with the impression that Psalm 82 isn't Scripture but full of Polytheism. Not that John makes it more clear. At least not for me.

Anyone who can decrypt the divine council full of gods?
